This week a ship will leave Haifa, Israel, with 800 cases of 22 premium wines from 9 boutique Israeli wineries not currently available in the US, many of which are not kosher and are intended for a broad audience. The wine is imported by Israeli Wine Direct, a new specialty importer focused on introducing Americans to outstanding and often unknown wines and winemakers from Israel.
The eastern Mediterranean, which includes Israel, is the birthplace of wine. Thousands of years ago, a thriving wine scene existed in Israel, and wine from Israel was exported throughout the region. Interrupted for centuries by outside conquest, today the wine world is witnessing a re-emergence of outstanding winemaking in Israel. There are now nearly 200 wineries there, many producing outstanding wines unknown to Americans. Wine from Israel is beginning to receive international recognition by the likes of critic Robert Parker and Wine Spectator magazine.
The 22 wines are available now while they ship for pre-order in select states through the Israeli Wine Direct. Visitors can learn more about the wineries and winemakers.
Israeli Wine Direct, LLC, a Wine Direct Company, was founded by Richard Shaffer in April of 2007. The company hand-selects the best small-production wine from Israel (kosher and non-kosher) and makes them.
